Ripon Races – The Garden Racecourse

Ripon races take place in North Yorkshire at a thoroughbred horse racing venue that is approximately 24 miles northwest of York and has the nickname ‘Garden Racecourse’. This is because it is set in beautiful open countryside. Racing in the area has taken place since 1664, and the town gained a significant amount of attention in 1723, as it became the place to host the first race for female jockeys. Ripon Racecourse as we know it today did not come about until 1900. In 2003, the Racegoers Club voted it the Best Small Racecourse it in the North. Today, it hosts a number of great flat races throughout the season.

The racecourse at Ripon is a fairly sharp oval shape and it goes right-handed. The track is roughly a mile and five furlongs in circumference and there is a five-furlong straight. There is also a six-furlong straight course. The round course has tight bends and pronounced undulations in the straight, making it a bit of challenge and better suited to front-runners rather than gallopers. If you can get away from the ridge at about a furlong and a half out, you will be extremely difficult to beat. The stands’ side rail is the best place to be on the sprint course.

What To Expect From The Course At Ripon

There are many great Ripon races that take place throughout the year, but the most prestigious is the Great St. Wilfrid Stakes. This is named after the patron saint of Ripon, and it is a flat handicap race of six furlongs for horses that are three years old and older. The most successful horse in this race is Pepper Lane, who won the contest consecutively in 2011 and 2012. Daniel Tudhope was riding the horse at the time, making him the leading jockey, as he also rode Out Do to victory in 2014. David O’Meara trains both horses, making him the leading trainer in the race.

Another one of the most popular Ripon Races is the Ripon Champion Two-Years-Old Trophy, which is unsurprisingly open to two-year-olds only and is a listed race of six furlongs. It is scheduled to take place in August every month. The jockey and trainer combination of Tony Hamilton and Richard Fahey has worked well in recent times. Notable winners include Whitman, Supplicant, Deauville Prince, Hold Your Colour, and Space Shuttle. If you want to experience Ripon races for yourself, you will have the choice of three enclosures – the Course Enclosure, the Paddock Enclosure, and the Club Enclosure.
