Thurles Races – Many Famous Horses Have Won At Thurles

Thurles races take place in Country Tipperary; with the course being situated approximately 1.5km west of the town centre of Thurles. Races have occurred for many years here. The earliest recording of race meetings was a three-day meeting in 1732. There are a lot of famous horses that have run at Thurles in recent years. This includes Vintage Crop, the Melbourne Cup winner, Klairon Davis, the winner of the Champion Chase and Arkle at Cheltenham, and finally Rule Supreme, the winner of the Grade 1 Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown and the Grade 1 Sun Alliance Chase at Cheltenham.

Thurles Racecourse only hosts National Hunt racing, with 11 fixtures staged between October and March every year. The track itself is right-handed and undulating, measuring at about a mile and a quarter in circumference. The track favours handy horses, as it is very sharp in character. There is a fairly steep descent to the home straight yet there are parts of the course that are uphill. It really is a fantastic track to ride and the ground here never gets too deep. You do need to ensure you give your horse a chance of coming up the back straight, which is uphill, if you are to have a shot of winning.
